Slide Rules

A slide rule is a computational device that uses logarithmic scales to allow rapid multiplication and division of numbers. Some slide rules allow for more complex operations, such as square roots.

The slide rule was developed in the 17th century based on John Napier's work on logarithms. Edmund Gunter of Oxford developed a device with a single logarithmic scale that, in combination with other tools, could be used to multiply and divide. William Oughtred invented the circular slide rule in 1630. Later, in 1632, he developed a device that resembles the modern slide rule by combining two Gunter scales.
