Abacus

An abacus, also known as a counting frame, is a tool used in arithmetic. Although it is an ancient device it is still used by merchants in China, Japan, India and in other parts of the globe.

The precursor to the abacus is the counting board. The most primitive form of a counting board is simply lines drawn in sand with pebbles placed between the lines as place-holders to represent numbers. A more portable device would be a wooden board with grooves that could hold place markers.
